5 Questions with a Therapist and Eating Disorder Specialist, Heather Davis, LCSW
1. What made you focus your career on helping people with eating disorders?
My own recovery from an eating disorder led me to this work. I know how hard and overwhelming recovery can feel, but I also know it's possible. I wanted to offer the kind of support I would have wanted during my own struggle: someone who understood how difficult recovery can be and who didn't see me as defined by my eating disorder.
2. What defines your treatment philosophy, and why did you choose it?
My approach is values driven. Together, we'll identify what matters most to you and look at how the eating disorder may be getting in the way. Recovery isn't just about changing behaviors. It's about moving toward a life that feels authentic, meaningful, and aligned with your values.
3. How do you feel when a client is hesitant about recovery or doesn't even want it?
That's completely understandable. A lot of people feel conflicted about recovery. You don't have to be completely ready or motivated to start therapy. We can talk about what makes change feel difficult, what you're worried about giving up, and what you might want your life to look like without the eating disorder. Even a little willingness is enough to start.
4. How do you feel about partial recovery?
I believe full recovery is possible and worth pursuing, but I also recognize that recovery is a process. Partial recovery can be a meaningful part of that process, and every step toward greater freedom from the eating disorder matters. My role is to meet clients where they are, respect their pace, and continue to hold hope for full recovery.
5. What's one lesson you would tell your younger professional self?
Clients need space to make their own decisions and move at their own pace. My job isn't to tell someone exactly what their recovery should look like. It's to listen, offer guidance, challenge them when needed, and support them through the difficult parts. Sometimes I may see the possibility of recovery before they can, and I'm comfortable holding onto that hope until they're able to see it for themselves.
